There is no clear historical antecedent for the name; the manuscript records it alongside the variants Malthous and Halpas, and says no more. His grade is Great Earl, a category the book links to Mars, and he commands twenty-six legions, a modest figure fitting a spirit of single, military purpose. What is asked of him is logistical rather than occult: to raise towers, stock them with weapons and ammunition, and dispatch men of war to whatever places the operator names. He is, in practice, a siege engineer. The text warns only of his hoarse voice and of the stock dove's form in which he appears.
