No firm historical antecedent supports this name, which the manuscript records only as Malphas or Malpas. His grade is Mighty President, a category the book links to Mercury, planet of exchange and information; forty legions place him above the catalogue's average. His offer is twofold and symmetrical: he builds houses and high towers and throws down those of enemies, and above all reveals what those enemies are thinking, besides giving good familiars. The operator seeks him out as informant and as demolisher. The text warns that he comes first in the shape of a crow, with a hoarse voice, and takes human form only when commanded.
