The spelling Caim has led to associations with the biblical Cain, though the manuscript does not assert this and the connection is not established. He appears as a Great President with thirty legions, a mercurial grade in the book's scheme, which is apt here: all his power is translation. He gives understanding of the voices of birds, the lowing of oxen, the barking of dogs and the sound of waters, and he answers concerning things to come. The operator calls him to hear what already sounds and is not understood. According to the text he answers amid burning ashes or live coals, a material condition uncommon in the catalogue.
