The name matches the Latin bifrons, "two-fronted", a classical epithet of Janus; the manuscript does not explain the choice, but the coincidence is hard to ignore. He appears as an Earl, a martial grade in the book's scheme, with a mere six legions, among the lowest figures in the Goetia. His profile is scholarly and funerary: he teaches astrology, geometry and other arts, knows the virtues of herbs, stones and woods, moves corpses from place to place, and lights candles upon graves. An operator seeks him to learn and to work with the dead. He appears first as a monster and takes human shape only when ordered.
