Ipos arrives without verifiable genealogy: classical derivations have been proposed for Ipes or Ayporos, but none of them holds, and the question is best left open. The manuscript grants him two grades at once, Earl and Mighty Prince, Mars and Jupiter, with thirty-six legions, a high standing for an entity with so short an entry. He is invoked for two very concrete things: to know what is past and what is to come, and to make the operator witty and bold. What was asked of him was intelligence and courage, not wealth. His composition, an angel's body, a lion's head, goose's feet and a hare's tail, gathers animals of courage and of flight.
