The name has been linked to the Latin barbatus, "bearded", a reasonable proposal the manuscript does not confirm and which is best not taken for granted. He is a Great Duke, a Venusian rank, with 30 legions, and his distinguishing trait is temporal: he appears only when the Sun enters Sagittarius, attended by four kings and their troops. The operator wanted him for three concrete things: to understand the song of birds and the voices of animals, to disenchant hidden treasures held by magic, and to reconcile broken friendships. He also declares past and future. He is among the few whose conjuration depends on a precise window in the astrological calendar.
