The manuscript dispatches him with an unhelpful comparison: he has the appearance of a "Xenophilus", a dog-headed creature it does not describe and whose identification remains unresolved. Nor is there any firm etymology of the name. A great and strong Duke, a Venusian rank, with 40 legions. His function is that of an all-purpose counsellor: he answers any question on past, present and future, reconciles friendships and bestows honour and dignity. Whoever called him was after judgement, not spectacle, and the text presents him as one of the most straightforward spirits to deal with in this stretch, with no warnings or special protocols.
