A soldier in red clothing and armour, with no animal feature whatsoever: that is how terse the manuscript is, offering neither antecedent nor etymology of the name. It titles him a Great Duke, a Venusian rank consistent with his function, with 26 legions in his charge. It assigns him two operations upon women: to make them love men and to render them barren. His is one of the entries that best shows the kind of demand the genre answered, centred on controlling other people's desire and fertility. Readings that derive the name from other languages are unsupported by evidence.
