With a serpent's tail and mounted on a mighty horse, the lion of Oriax carries two hissing serpents in his right hand. The form Orias circulates just as widely in the copies, and there is no secure etymology to defend. The grade of Marquis corresponds to the Moon within the text's scheme, and thirty legions place him in the middle band of the catalogue. He was consulted on the virtues of the stars and the mansions of the planets, applied astrology rather than contemplation, and also to transform men, grant dignities and win the favour of friends and enemies alike.
