Chax and Scox are the other spellings in which this name circulates, and its origin is unknown. He holds the grade of Great Marquis, a lunar rank in the book's scheme, with thirty legions under his command. What is asked of him is subtraction in every sense: he takes away the sight, hearing and understanding of any person named to him, steals money from the houses of kings, brings horses, and discovers what lies hidden. He is a spirit of dispossession. The text's warning is unusually explicit: he lies until he is forced into the triangle, so no answer of his counts before that point in the rite.
