The name points to Balaam, the diviner of the Book of Numbers hired to curse Israel who ends by blessing it; the Goetia turns him into a terrible King, great and powerful, with forty legions. The kingship ties him to the Sun and grants him command over other spirits, the book's highest grade. He is consulted on things past, present and to come, asked for wit and, above all, for invisibility for the conjurer. His description is among the most crowded in the manuscript: three heads, of a bull, a man and a ram, flaming eyes, a serpent's tail, a furious bear for a mount, and a hawk upon his fist.
