Nothing certain can be said of the origin of this name, which alternates between Vepar, Vephar and Separ. He holds the grade of Great Duke with twenty-nine legions, a rank the text associates with Venus and shares with Focalor, just as he shares with him dominion over the waters. His practical function is that of a pilot: he guides armed ships wherever the operator wishes and raises tempests to sink a rival's. To this the text adds a more intimate power, death by wounds that turn gangrenous and fill with worms, which makes him an instrument of personal harm as well. He appears in the likeness of a mermaid.
