Weyer's catalogue, which predates the Goetia, already records this name as Forcalor; beyond that textual chain no origin is known. He appears as a strong and mighty Duke with thirty legions, and the dukedom, the book's most populous grade, corresponds to Venus among the planetary attributions. His domain is maritime: he commands the winds and the sea, sinks warships and drowns men. An operator with interests in trade or naval warfare knows exactly what to ask of him. The manuscript tempers the danger with a useful clause: he harms no one if he is expressly commanded not to.
