Aniel draws three letters from the 72-letter versions of the Shem HaMephorash that kabbalah derives from Exodus 14:19-21; the suffix -EL binds him to divine power, and his name reads "God of the virtues". He belongs to the Powers, the choir that in Pseudo-Dionysius restrains disorder and repels what assaults the established order, under the archangel Camael, from 24 to 28 September. He is petitioned to break sieges and win deadlocked lawsuits. In Rudd's Goetia he is set over Phenex, the poet spirit of sweet voice: seduction against the force that opens walls.
